Endurica Workshop: Tire Simulation Workflows with Endurica

Workshop Description: Learn how powerful it is to do multiple iterations simulating aspects of tire performance including self-heating, rolling resistance, high-speed, durability, ageing and oxidation. Training licenses included for all of Endurica’s software packages.

Day 1: 

Intro to the Endurica Toolbox

  • CL: Infinite life analysis
  • CL: Safe life analysis
  • DT: Damage tolerant analysis
  • MP: Multiphysics
  • EIE: Road loads

Tire Modeling Workflow Basics

  • 2D Static analysis: Mount, Inflate
  • 3D Static analysis: Symmetric Model Generation, Symmetric Results Transfer, Footprint
  • Steady State Rolling: Driving/Braking, Free Rolling, Slip Angle/Lateral Force Generation

Day 2:

Infinite Life Workflow

  • Rubber’s fatigue limit
  • Crack precursors in tires
  • Critical Plane Analysis for multiaxial loading
  • Defining Steady State Rolling
  • Computing Safety Factor with Endurica CL
  • Viewing the Safety Factor sphere

Safe Life Workflow

  • Fracture mechanics: tearing energy and fatigue crack growth
  • Strain crystallization
  • Outputs: Stress-strain, crack growth, Haigh diagrams, Life sphere and crack orientation, strain, stress, energy histories
  • Steady state rolling / basic tire durability for a single loading condition
  • Lagrange rolling / sidewall lettering under ozone attack

Day 3:

Incremental Workflow and Damage Tolerance

  • Specifying a schedule of testing steps
  • Tracking crack development, residual strength and residual life
  • Combining transient and steady state load cases: damage during obstacle impacts
  • Co-simulation and ageing

Multiphysics workflows

  • Steady state self-heating and rolling resistance
  • Transient thermal analysis + thermal runaway
  •  Coupling structural and thermal analyses
  • Oxygen diffusion / reaction

Road Loads

  • Building a pre-computed map of tire behavior
  • Analysis of real-time tire loading
  • Rainflow counting and identification of most-damaging events

Bio: An internationally acclaimed authority in the failure mechanics of rubber and elastomers, the founder and president of Endurica – Dr. Will Mars – is an engaging teacher and accomplished presenter. The comprehensive testing and simulation tools Endurica has developed under his direction help companies across the world to speed their product development process and compete on durability. He has received several awards for his scientific contributions and innovations including the 2025 University of Toledo MEANES (Mechanical Engineering Alumni Network of Experts and Scholars) Award, the 2022 Herzlich Medal for outstanding impact and innovation in the tire industry, the 2020 Tibbetts Award from the United States Small Business Administration in recognition of accomplishments in creating cutting-edge technologies, the 2017 Rubber Division ACS Arnold Smith Special Service Award, the 2007 Sparks Thomas award of ACS Rubber Division, and the 1999 Henry Fuchs award of the SAE Fatigue Design & Evaluation Committee.

Dr. Mars served as the editor of the Rubber Division, American Chemical Society journal Rubber Chemistry & Technology, and is also the past editor of Tire Science & Technology with 60+ peer-reviewed publications and four patents. His experiences and contributions span a topic range including material characterization, product evaluation, constitutive modeling, crack nucleation, fracture mechanics, and fatigue life prediction methods. He has over 60 peer-reviewed scientific publications and four patents in the area of elastomer durability.
