Dr. Woodall has been working in environmental and public health for over twenty years. His experience includes air and water quality management, environmental sampling, and assessments of human health risk. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Florida (Gainesville, FL), a Master of Science in Environmental Health from East Tennessee State University (Johnson City, TN), and his PhD in Toxicology from North Carolina State University (Raleigh, NC). He held positions with East Tennessee State University, several consulting firms, and with the American Petroleum Institute before coming to the US EPA in Research Triangle Park, NC in 2002. He is currently a Toxicologist with the National Center for Environmental Assessment (NCEA) within the Office of Research and Development (ORD). His work at NCEA has focused on the development and use of health effect reference values, with particular emphasis on inhalation exposures for chronic, as well as acute and other “less-than-lifetime” durations. Work efforts include development of IRIS assessments; serving as the ORD representative to the National Advisory Committee for Acute Exposure Guideline Levels; and providing technical support to EPA Program Offices, especially the Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards. In addition to these duties, he is a member of the U.S. delegation working on OECD Acute Inhalation test guidelines, and participates in a number of Agency and cross-Agency work groups on these topics. Dr. Woodall has had a long interest in improving the methods for performing human health risk assessment. In particular, he leads a multi-agency effort to share a common set of scientific resources used in health risk assessments with the objective of reducing redundant efforts and finding cost effective solutions to using the best available science in assessments.
